Student’ Name Professor’s Name Course Date Politics and Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act Legislators are mainly elected to serve the needs of their constituents. The legislators have the power to implement ay regulation that they see will best serve the country. Legislators are, however, limited in their ability to make legislation that they believe are viable for the country. Their supporters will deny them support feel that they are supporting legislation that is not favorable to them. The hurdle in ending the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is proof that the legislators will make cost-benefit calculations for their re-elections and not the society. The Republicans claim that the ACA is not sustainable due to its high costs. They also claim that the ACA will hinder businesses and stifle insurance companies. ACA also increases federal and state expenditure on healthcare (Oberlander, 2019). Despite the suggested costs, legislators have been unable to repeal the act. Even Republican legislators oppose the bill since they fear repercussions from their constituents. The legislators make a cost-benefit analysis of the act and see an increased cost to society. Cost-benefit analysis on the re-election indicates that the legislators that repeal the act will lose political favor with their constituents. ACA increases the ability of many Americans to obtain insurance at a cheap cost. That implies that any legislator that supports the repeal of the Act works against the needs of their constituents. Many Americans are in favor of the ACA, and any repeal of the act should come with a cheaper alternative to earn their support (Fraser, 2019). Legislators in fear of losing in the re-elections overlook the looming costs the act has on the economy and the promises they made to the country to remove the ACA. Their cost-benefit analysis limits their conclusion to their re-election and not on the overall outcome to the society. The legislators value their re-election over the societal benefit. Feldstein’s observation for the legislator’s cost-benefit analysis shows that politicians will recommend or position national policies based on the position of their supporters (Bond, 2019). Legislators will ignore the right perspective and follow the popular view when recommending or taking a position on national policies. Their supporter’s perspective might be wrong or misguided, but the legislators will take the sides of their supporters and not that which benefits society. References Bond, J. R. (2019).
